Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
As the Israelites prepared to enter their promised land, Canaan, Moses told them, “See I have taught you decrees and laws as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to Him? And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?” (Deuteronomy 4:5-8)
How relevant this question is to us today! As children of the God who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and everything in it, are we wise and understanding people? Do other people consider us as wise and understanding? Are we living as counselled by our Lord and the Holy Spirit? Do we know who we are? When we allow God to direct our life, those around us will see true wisdom, wisdom not of the world but of God. Others will be confused as to what to do in our complicated world, but God can guide us to make correct choices and wise decisions. As we have a Counsellor, the Spirit of Truth, our obedience to Him will make others come to us for wise counsel.
Human reasoning does not make us wise. It might even lead us to reject the ways of God. Apostle Paul says, ‘For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.’ (1 Corinthians 1:18-25)
God in His foreknowledge has chosen each of us to be His ambassadors. God’s purpose in creating a nation for Himself was to demonstrate His wisdom to the world through the obedience of His people. In Zechariah 8:23 we read, ‘ This is what the Lord Almighty says: “ In those days ten men from all languages and nations will take hold of one Jew by the hem of his robe and say, ‘ Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you.’” Today as His people, His Church, we have been given The Counsellor, The Spirit of Truth, who guides us into all the truth. The Spirit of Truth does not speak on His own, but speaks what He hears and He tells us what is yet to come. (John 16:13)
Do we hear from The Counsellor before we take our decisions? Are we living a life in obedience to what God has taught us and is teaching us each day through His Word? Can the world around us see in us a God who is very near to us? Do they consider us wise and understanding people? Our God is the same yesterday, today and forever. Today if you have heard His voice do not harden your heart in rebellion, but be willing to obey Him so that He will be honored through our lives. He can make us wise and understanding. May God bless us all to fulfill His plan and purpose in us and through us as we obey Him.
